The University of Manchester’s Water Resource Group has extensive experience in water resources management and planning studies, specialises in water resources systems modelling and optimisation, and builds software tools to enable stakeholder interaction.
Describe your business.
The UMWRG is led by Prof. Julien Harou and comprises a Group Manager a Research Fellow and 3 Post-doctoral Research Associates all with PhDs and extensive experience of innovation in water resources systems modelling. The group also includes three professional software developers who design and build bespoke software to manage datasets, models, and especially to enable user interaction with models and results, typically online. The group has four PhD students in water resources systems modelling and hydro-economic analysis. Active grants and contracts total over £1.5M combined in research and consultancy. Clients in the UK include Ofwat (financial regulator), the Environment Agency (water resources regulator), Thames Water (London’s water utility), Anglian Water, and collaborating or client international organisations over the past 5 years include the World Bank, International Finance Corporation, World Wildlife Fund, TNC, and others with work centred in Africa and Asia. UMWRG has influenced specific water infrastructure planning processes, system designs and investment decisions, and informed £8.7 billion of investment in water supply systems in London and the East of England. Abroad, UMWRG’s work changed how the World Bank assessed Nepal’s Upper Arun hydropower project, and contributed to pausing the International Finance Corporation’s participation in the Sounda Gorge Dam in the Republic of Congo. UMWRG partners with WWF, IUCN, TNC and the Stimson Center in international policy advocacy for system scale design of river basins.
